Use AI to increase thinking—not avoid it
A good homeschool AI workflow leaves the learner doing the cognitively important part. Ask for a hint sequence, a counterexample, a Socratic question or a fresh practice problem. Avoid prompts that turn an assignment into a finished essay, lab report or worked solution.
For parent work, the balance is different. Drafting a weekly outline, simplifying instructions, producing a first-pass rubric or brainstorming discussion questions is exactly where automation can return time without pretending to teach the child.
Choose the tool by failure mode
General chatbots are broad but can hallucinate. Source-grounded tools are easier to audit but only know the material you provide. Specialist tutors have a narrower domain, yet may offer a better teaching sequence and progress model. Writing assistants are useful at sentence level but can overcorrect style.
The safest choice is not automatically the product with the most guardrails. It is the product whose mistakes you can notice. A parent comfortable checking historical sources may use a research assistant well; the same parent may be unable to judge an adaptive algebra explanation.
ESA eligibility is a separate question
